The Fulcrum of the Heart

Autumn Equinox title over an autumn forest and lake, with colorful trees reflected in water and a glowing heart at center.

The Autumn Equinox brings us to one of those natural points of reflection—

a threshold between light and darkness, movement and rest, what has been and what is still becoming.

This seasonal turning point occurs when day and night come into near-equal measure, as we transition from the longer days of summer toward the shorter days of autumn.

It also marks a shift in the astrological calendar, as the Sun enters Libra—

the sign associated with balance, harmony, and relationship.

The Equinox itself embodies these themes beautifully,

holding light and darkness in a natural moment of balance.

Both belong.

Perhaps we need the darkness to recognize the light—

just as we need the night to see the stars.

And somewhere between these opposing currents,

we are invited to find our own center.

Balance Amplified

This year’s Equinox arrives on an interesting threshold in time—September 22 here in Connecticut, while already September 23 in Universal Time.

This meeting of two calendar dates brings another layer of symbolism to a moment already rich with meaning.

In numerology, 2 represents balance, harmony, partnership, and cooperation.

When a number repeats, I pay attention.

With 2 doubled in 22, those qualities are amplified.

22 also carries the energy of the Master Builder—bringing vision into form and creating something tangible from what we know within.

And beneath it all, 22 reduces to 4—the number of foundation, structure, and stability.

There is something beautifully fitting about 22 meeting the Equinox—different symbols and cycles, each reflecting a similar message of finding stability within change.

Rather than asking us to hold everything perfectly still, these patterns remind us that balance is alive.

We are continually adjusting between thought and feeling,

receiving and doing, holding on and letting go.

Balance isn’t something we achieve once. It is something we practice.

Mind & Emotion

In astrology, the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars are considered our personal planets, reflecting how we experience and express ourselves in our everyday lives.

Looking at their elemental relationships at this Equinox reveals another interesting pattern.

Here, that same theme of balance appears through the energies of Air and Water—between how we think and how we feel.

The Sun speaks to our sense of self and how we express who we are,

Mercury to the way we think, communicate, and make sense of our experiences,

while the Moon reflects our inner world, instincts, and feelings.

With the Sun and Mercury in Libra, together with the Moon in Aquarius, these energies move through the realm of Air—bringing emphasis to thought, perception, communication, and perspective.

Libra seeks balance, harmony, and understanding through relationship, while Aquarius invites us to step back, see from a broader perspective, and consider possibilities beyond our usual way of thinking.

Venus speaks to what we value and are drawn toward—beauty, connection, and relationship—while Mars speaks to desire, action, and how we move through the world.

With Venus in Scorpio and Mars in Cancer, these energies move through the realm of Water—emotion, intuition, vulnerability, memory, desire, and what we instinctively feel beneath the surface.

Venus finds expression through the deep, transformative waters of Scorpio, while Mars moves through the protective, feeling-centered waters of Cancer.

Rather than opposing one another, these energies can support each other—receiving and doing, intuition and action, softness and strength.

Too much Air, and we can live entirely inside the mind—

analyzing, rationalizing, replaying.

Too much Water, and we can become immersed in the emotional current,

responding from what we feel before taking time to understand it.

Perhaps balance begins when we learn to listen to both.

The Heart as the Fulcrum

Imagine a balance scale.

On one side sits the mind.

On the other, our feelings.

At the center is the fulcrum—

the supporting point that allows the scale to find its balance.

The heart.

Some of us move through life primarily from the mind—relying on thought, logic, and what we can reason our way through.

Others may be guided more strongly by emotion—responding to what we feel without always allowing the mind to offer another perspective.

The heart brings the two together, allowing both to have a voice.

And when we become quiet enough to listen, the heart also connects us to something deeper—our inner wisdom, our Soul, our Higher Self.

This is where thought, feeling, and our deeper knowing meet.

And perhaps that is why the heart is our fulcrum.

It helps us find our center as life continues to move.

This Equinox, allow yourself to return to your heart—and give yourself time to pause and be present with what you are experiencing.

As we become more present with ourselves, we deepen our understanding and self-acceptance—and become more aware of how we relate to others.

True balance isn't a fixed state.

It is found in our ability to move with life's opposing currents while remaining connected to our heart.

The fulcrum is within you.
